Pterodactyl is Zach, Joe, and Matt. They live in Brooklyn, though this month Zach was out of town and thus represented here in the form of a mannequin.  In any case, we asked Matt and Joe a few questions about touring and Sesame Street.

Chief Magazine: What’s the origin of the name Pterodactyl?

Pterodactyl: Pterodactyl is older boys getting excited about making music the way younger boys get excited about dinosaurs.

Did you feel like Jurassic Park 3 denigrated the Jurassic Park franchise?

It's always been basically about number 1, hasn't it?  Even though it was definitely a cop-out that Richard Attenborough's character doesn't get eaten by tiny dinosaurs like he does in the book.  We didn't see number 2, and the only thing Matt can say about number 3 is that he fell asleep during it.

Where are you guys from originally?

Matt and Joe are both New Englanders.  Like crisp autumn air and sailboat races.

How did the band first come together? How long had you known each other before the band?

We met at school in Ohio and basically started playing music together immediately.  For a while, it was just dudes making guitar noise with a fast drum beat behind it.

The band is signed to the label Brah, which is run by Oneida. Did you know those guys at all before signing? How familiar were you with their music beforehand?

Oneida is like our mother, so we know them like most boys know their mother.  That is, we recognize that she gave us life, but it's frustrating to us that we'll never share intimacy with her the way our father did.

How are they as label bosses? It seems beneficial to be on a label run by musicians, and also run by people who aren’t that old.

Most of the business end of the Brah horse is run by JagJaguwar.  This is a good thing because Oneida is free to hold it down on the bong-smoking end of the horse.
